Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother (2026) Written Review
Would you be able to do a job that goes directly against your faith? For many people (of all types of religions), faith is such an essential piece of their existence. This is the foundation of their worldview as well as the core of their values. Religion can be a blueprint to how you should live your life. But life isn’t always an easy existence to navigate when so many conflicting occurrences find their way into our lives. You can be a devout Muslim but live a life of death and blood. Bassam Tariq new action/thriller is such a deeply poignant and unique story of a devout Muslim assassin who must change his view when his wife dies, and he becomes a single father. What ensues is a visceral and powerful experience that is both exciting and thought-provoking.
What does Tariq bring to this experience from behind the camera? The first thing you will notice is just how striking this cinematic experience is. Katelin Arizmendi, the cinematographer for the film, delivers such a powerful experience through the visual presentation of Tariq’s story. The colors are rich and striking. The camera is blocked and framed to perfection with plenty of evocative shots that yell with such power. There are a few shots of star Mahershala Ali that are simply awe-inspiring. The film boasts a beautiful balance of tenderness and tension. The moments that Ali’s Latif shares with his children are full of emotion and warmth. Then you have the moments of violence that are shocking and brutal. The action is staged to perfection with impressive in-camera stunts and an overflow of tension and thrills. The suspense can be arresting, and Tariq shows just how strong a handle on this cinematic medium that he has. The pace of the film is pitch perfect as the balance between thrills and emotion is sharp. The compositions by Son Lux is the perfect foundation for the experience as the music perfectly accentuates Tariq’s vision of this film.
Does the screenplay that Tariq brings to life match his directorial flair? The core of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is so strong. The conflict at the center of the film is a rich and thoughtful experience that is hard to ignore. This is a challenging concept. You may question the contradictions of Latif’s existence, and this becomes the key internal conflict of the film. Balancing the dangerous and violent world of an assassin and the need to be a present father opens the door for plenty of drama. Few films capture the complexity of a single father’s life as Tariq’s film and that is one of the most powerful elements of the experience. The attempts to escape this cycle of violence opens the door for plenty of intense moments that keeps the narrative thrusting forward. The looseness of the structure might be one of the only clear shortcomings of the film, but it is never enough to drown out the intensity of this film. The conflict of Latif with a charlatan like John Cho’s Pastor Kwan is a thought-provoking element as Tariq has plenty to say about those who leverage faith for power. There is a bold narrative choice that reframes quite a bit at the end of the film which will certainly be polarizing. Where you might have to suspend disbelief, this moment injects a powerful image as well as delivering some of the most poignant thematic work and writing in the film.
How does the cast fit into this powerful experience? This film would not be as powerful or effective without a powerful central turn from Ali. His physicality during the action sequences is striking and intense. Ali is an incredible performer who injects plenty of emotional complexity into Latif. The young performers who portray Latif’s children all deliver moving turns and the family unit in the film has great chemistry. This allows those more tender moments to hit ever so poignantly. Cho delivers a larger-than-life antagonist who is fun to watch and is quite slimy. His presence in contrast with Ali makes the climax of this film hit so much deeper. You have a few veteran performers like Giancarlo Esposito and Trammell Tilman who make an impact on screen and deliver some presence to this powerful film. Laith Nakli is a strong addition to the experience as well as a more antagonistic presence in conflict with Ali. After being such a standout in Ramy, it is nice to see Nakli getting a spotlight to shine in this as well with this role as a dangerous individual (which he sells quite impressively).
Is Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother a vehicle for Ali to return to form? After spending years in limbo with other projects, it is great to see Ali shine in this role which combines action and emotion. This is a powerful exploration of faith where Tariq engages his audience in an engrossing experience. Powerful and poignant, this action/thriller has plenty of depth as it matches tenderness with brutality. Hopefully, Tariq and Ali will continue to deliver such impressive cinematic experiences as this one.
